NYU Community Helping Haiti

January 26, 2010

I am so proud to be a part of the NYU community.  The NYU Medical Center is helping Haiti by assembling a group of physicians who volunteered their time and skills. Dr. Robert Grossman, Dean and CEO, wrote an email to the NYU community about this project.  "Dr. Fritz Francois, Dr. Patricia Poitvien, Dr. Mona Rigaud, and Mekbib Gemeda, assistant dean for diversity affairs and community health, have been working together to create NYULMC-HEART (Haitian Effort and Relief Team). With support from Partners in Health, an international organization that provides medical services to impoverished communities, this group of faculty and staff is volunteering their time and skills on the ground in Haiti."

If any physician or nurse would like to help out in volunteering their time and skills for future relief trips,  e-mail Joyce Long at haitivolunteers@nyumc.org with the following information:

* Name and credentials (MD or RN only)
* Specialty
* Phone number and e-mail address
* Languages spoken
* Passport status

The first HEART team leaves for Haiti today for a one-week relief effort. The team members include:

* Fritz Francois, MD, MS, Medicine – Team Leader
* Prisca Bernard-Joseph, RN (Bellevue) Labor & Delivery/OR
* David Feldman, MD, Pediatric Orthopaedics
* Mary Ann Hopkins, MD, MPhil, Surgery
* Kenneth Mroczek, MD, Orthopaedic Surgery
* Patricia Poitevien, MD, Pediatrics
* Diana (Lucia) Voiculescu, MD, Anesthesiology

HEART will be bringing a large amount of medical supplies with them. While in Haiti, the team will be assisting at the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince, providing presurgical, surgical, and postsurgical care to victims of the earthquake.

During their stay, they will be blogging their experiences and reflections at http://heart.med.nyu.edu/.

We also have another group of clinician volunteers waiting for a flight confirmation to go to Haiti in about a week.

The outpouring of support from our community has been tremendous.  I'd like to thank the HEART team members for their compassion, dedication, time and skills in this effort.  I know their service will have a lasting and profound impact.

My 2010 Goals

January 22, 2010

Goals 2010 found in Etsy via abcande

I'd like to share my goals on my blog rather than keeping it private in my journal.  I wrote these goals down in December 2009 and realized there is power in sharing it with everyone.  Writing down goals, plans, and intentions on paper or computer help to manifest them faster.  Plus, it will help to remind me of my goals and to move in the right direction.  Every three months I will re-evaluate my goals so they are aligned with my values.  To distingu...

WordCamp Boston 2010
As you can see from my image above, I am attending Wordcamp Boston 2010 this weekend. I am very excited to attend Wordcamp Boston since I was not able to attend Wordcamp NYC 2009 but volunteered at the event.  I have always had a passion for learning new things and one of my 2010 goals is to learn Wordpress to understand the technology behind blog platforms. Wordcamp Boston is this coming weekend so I will write another blog posting after the event.

Health Tip: Week 2 Natural Juices

January 13, 2010

Fruit juice makes a healthy and tasty start to the day, but if you have a juicer or blender, you might like to blend fruit and vegetables together.  Carrots go well with oranges or apples and is the ideal starter vegetable to experiment in a blender.

Creative Everyday: Body

January 12, 2010

My vision board of "Body"

I am a totally left brain person.  I am analytical , logical, sequential, and objective.  I used to be right brain  when I was young.  I loved art, drawing, writing, and being creative.  What happened to the right brained -turned left brain person? Well,  I went to college, passed my nursing boards, worked in the clinical setting for several years, got my Master's degree and then joined the rat race of corporate America.  That's what happened.

I realized last year tha...

The Happiness Project: Get More Exercise

January 11, 2010

This You Tube video from Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project is a great motivator to exercise.  Even if you do not believe in resolutions, make HEALTH a priority because you only have one and if your health deteriorates, well, it goes downhill from there and consequences occur.  Love your body, maintain your health!

Some points Gretchen talks about in the video:

  • January's word of the month is "Energy"
  • Week 1 - Get more sleep
  • Week 2 - Get more exercise
  • Exercise is a mood booster
  • More e...

Click here to purchase the pedometer above

Welcome to the first installment of Fitness Fridays! I will share the health/fitness products that I have bought and review them.  This week I combined a health tip with a product review.  The pedometer that I use is the one above from Avon.  The pedometer can be set to either steps, miles, or kilometers and can be reset at any time.  The pedometer is individualized and contains a feature to calculate how long one's stride is.  I have been using  a pe...

"What is it that you want to do with the one, wild, precious thing called your life?

-Mary Oliver

Hmmmm....Have you ever thought about what you wanted in your life? Before you answer that question, I ask you to relax, breathe in deeply and exhale, look around you, and now look inside yourself.    "What is it that you want to do with the one, wild, precious thing called your life?

Why New Year's Resolutions Do Not Work

January 3, 2010

photo found via Kind over Matter originally uploaded by Jan Michellardi

Now, I am not a pessimist and I am not wanting to start your New Year's off to a bad start.  This is just my opinion of why New Year's resolutions do not work.  Only 6% actually keep their resolutions. People tend to forget by February what their resolutions are.  Why?

New Year's resolutions do not work because:

  • Resolutions are too broad
  • No time line
  • Not written down
  • No one holding you accountable
  • Resolutions are not in line w...

INSPIRATION

I have found the happiest people are those who do the most for others.

Don't fear your failure so much that you refuse to try new things,  The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions:  could have, would have, and should have.

Extraordinary people survive under the most terrible circumstances and they become more extraordinary because of it.
